We are fast approaching the most exciting time of year in the CrossFit community. On February 26th, the global CrossFit community embarks on the first leg of a 5+ month journey to find the fittest athletes in the world. The first leg includes five Open workouts, which are announced weekly starting on Thursday, February 26th.
What is the CrossFit Open?
Athletes (yes, that's you) all over the world pay the $20 registration to participate in the 2015 CrossFit Open (209,585 last year) and they have an opportunity to complete that week's designated workout between Thursday when it is announced, and turn in their validated scores prior to Monday evening. As a community, we will be designating every Friday to that week's Open workout. So what that means is that regardless of whether you decide to participate in the Open, every Friday class for five weeks will be doing that Open workout. Like last year, we will have a special "Friday Night Fights" during The Open where we will run heats of the Open Workout during the evening classes....last year we had a great gathering for these classes and it was a ton of fun.
So then what?
During the Open, all individuals and affiliate teams are ranked week by week, cumulatively, and stack ranked for the world to see. Once the Open is completed after five weeks, all individuals and affiliate teams are ranked one final time throughout their designated region (Northeast for us).
The number of athletes and teams to advance from the Open to regionals varies from region to region.
· 20 men, 20 women and 15 teams will advance from regions in the U.S. and Canada. · 30 men, 30 women and 20 teams will advance from Europe and Australia. · 10 men, 10 women and 10 teams will advance from Latin America, Asia and Africa.
The region combinations result in a total of 40 men, 40 women and 30 teams at all regionals except the South Regional, which will have 50 men, 50 women and 40 teams.
Each regional will take place over three days, and the top five men, five women and five teams at the end of the weekend will qualify for the 2015 Reebok CrossFit Games.
The CrossFit Games are held annually at the Home Depot Center in Carson, CA in late July. There, the athletes compete for 5 days to determine the Fittest on Earth, and claim the huge $275,000 prize awarded to one male and one female. The total purse this year will be over $2MM!!
We have had several 2013 and 2014 Individual Games competitors roll through The Swamp over the last twelve months to train, including Mat Fraser, Noah Olsen, Dan Bailey, Michele Letendre, Samantha Briggs, Rachel Martinez, and Sheila Barden....not to mention scores of high level regional athletes as well. You guys are a lot closer to the action than you probably even realize. The point is, all these people started out in the same position as you....entering their personal and billing information, and registering for The Open. I'm not saying we are all going to the Games, but I don't know of any other sports that allow you to compete for five weeks against the very best in your sport, and do it exactly the way they do it....whether it is one workout, one movement, or simply just one rep. That's pretty cool.
Okay, so now you know how the Open ties into everything.
What are some things to keep in mind about the Open?
1. The Open is really fun. 2. The Open has added a Scaled Division this year. 3. For the first time, in our opinion (because of this new Scaled option), it is truly open to all levels of CrossFitters. 4. If nothing else, it is an opportunity to be part of something fun, exciting, and special in the CrossFit community that you are an important part of. 5. It is a chance to measure your fitness against not only other CrossFitters, but yourself, as you move forward year after year on your CrossFit journey. 6. It is a bonding experience for our box. The energy during the Open is unrivaled, and it is a chance to see people test what they have been training all year for. 7. You do not have to register for the Open if you do not want to....register because 1) you understand what you are registering for, and 2) you are doing it for yourself. 8. If you are on the fence about doing it, please feel free to come talk to Mike, Paddy, Anne, Jenna, or Nick. 9. If you already know you are going to do it, use the link below to register. Make sure to designate The Swamp as your affiliate.
